Petra

A hand sheathing a knife in Petra, the knife block of timber sleeves

Petra is a knife holder designed for ARCOS from the elemental gesture of sheathing steel. A series of individual timber sleeves, set in rhythm on a stone base, takes each blade separately and leaves only the handle visible, emerging as a last vertical stroke. The independence of each sleeve creates an ensemble arranged asymmetrically on the base, leaving a small surface to be used as a support in the kitchen.

The stone gives weight and stability to the whole against the tipping caused by drawing out the knife, and at the same time serves as a natural transition to the material of the worktop on which it will rest. The result is a restrained, legible piece in which the everyday gesture of taking up and returning a tool acquires a serene order.
