Stone Apartment

Limestone core with slits of light beside a timber door in the Stone Apartment

A block of limestone occupies the centre of this small home in Valencia. A core that holds the bathrooms within and organises a tight layout around it. Stone thus becomes the backdrop of the house, a constant material presence in everyday use. Despite the restraint of its means, the project does not give up precision of definition: timber, glass and stone are articulated without artifice.

The core that houses the bathrooms is not clad: it is formed by self-supporting 4 cm stone pieces, tongue-and-groove jointed and without partitions, so that the stone is the wall itself. Fragments of glass are inserted into thin slits cut into the stone, crossing it and refracting light towards the interior bathrooms. At nightfall, the luminous cracks return the light to the living room.
